Actually the center section looks a lot like the X30 NASP I think it was, the scramjet that finally beat the X15's speed record*. They took a tiny vehicle and mounted it on the front of a large rocket.

*The X15 still holds the all time winged, manned, top speed record for a vessel in level flight. The shuttle is faster, but only on reentry. Mach 6.75 in level flight is still pretty damned fast for a manned vehicle.

rik's post is based on Russian Bears. The second stage is what Burt shows in the DVD Dark Sky. Months ago I sent a message via Scaled Composites website saying that please make the second stage reusable. I imagined a second stage that is a beefed up suborbital with one pilot and wings like SpaceShipOne but bigger, so it would land back to base like an aircraft. The third stage would be the orbiting craft: featherable stubbed wing craft with a heat sheild.

About 3 months after I sent that message to Burt, I heard him saying in some interview that the second stage would be reusable in an orbiting version (Tier2).

Something i find most exciting is the plasticity of "Rutan's"construction techniques. The adaptive potentials allow relatively small groups the potential to Model space exploration craft. This ability to compose and test workable designs ,through relatively short time frames, demanding far reduced man hours,...will unleash the imaginations/potentials/realities that ---were--- in the past owned by the politics of the ---only--- game in town "NASA" . An example might be a second generation "Searl"type device encapsulated in a composite type air/space frame.Such a device might rise slowly off ones back patio,..to park in geosynchronous orbit. After that,...WOW!,...so a very interesting time to play,...no?
